In the prevailing COVID-19 environment, the way people interact with everyday surroundings will be changing. As we ease out of lockdown and re-enter public buildings, we need to come to terms witht the "new normal" with complete certainty. To address this changing need, KONE, as a pioneer in people flow, has introduced a range of health and well-being solutions that will help recreate safer user journeys and healthy spaces in your buildings.

Amit Gossain,
MD, KONE Elevator India

When the going gets tough, the tough get going. As an organization that’s over a 100 years old, this adage is what defines us. In our journey spanning over a century, we have faced some unprecedented challenges and upheavals. But these are also events that honed our vision and propelled us to adapt quickly to offer timely, customer-centric solutions.

Our journey began as a humble machine repair shop in Helsinki in the year 1910. This was followed soon after by the First World War in 1914. The war taught our founders their first lesson in adaptability. KONE went on to produce 10 million brass shells and casings for the Russian army (at the time Finland was part of the Russian empire).

By the end of the war, KONE was manufacturing elevator components. Business began to gradually pick up, when The Great Depression enveloped the world like a thick blanket, in 1930. When elevator sales began to drop drastically, KONE began to manufacture industrial cranes to make ends meet. This was followed a few years later by the Second World War when KONE once again produced ammunition for Finland.

It was only a few years after the war, when relative peace prevailed, that KONE as an organization reinvented itself and shifted focus to offering vertical mobility solutions. Our long history has left behind a rich legacy that continues to define the way we work. It has taught us resilience, adaptability, and above all, safety. It has taught us to instinctively understand customer needs based to changing market and economic scenarios. It is the reason why, KONE has been one of the early adapters of technology and frontrunners in offering customers innovative solutions. It is also the reason why, we have thinking of your safety even as the world has been combating the pandemic. Now, as the world at large and India in particular, is taking baby steps in getting back some semblance of normalcy, we are ready with solutions for what we believe will aid you to ease into the ‘new normal’.

We understand that as cities and offices begin to open, the use of public spaces such as metro stations, shopping malls, and even offices, will change. With social distancing becoming the norm, it is of critical importance the people are able to maintain distances even in shared spaces. Spurred by KONE’s technical expertise and innovative mind-set, we have created solutions that will encourage physical distancing while enabling safety.

Containing the spread of the virus

We already know that the COVID-19 virus spreads through aerosol particles and survives on exterior surfaces for a certain period of time. To eliminate the danger of such contamination, we have introduced the new KONE Elevator AirPurifier. It uses technology – including an advanced photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) process developed by NASA for air control on spaceships- to improve air quality in the elevator car by removing most of the potential pollutants, like bacteria, viruses, dust and odours, in the air.
In addition, we have also introduced the KONE Handrail Sanitizer,?an escalator handrail cleaning solution that uses a type of ultraviolet light (UV-C) to disinfect escalator handrails. Continuous chemical-free cleaning happens inside the escalator, so that the users aren’t exposed to it. Exposure to ultra-violet radiation helps reduce and inhibit the reproduction of micro-organisms such as bacteria or viruses.

Touchless movement solutions

We understand that as you get back to work, you will be hesitant to touch common surfaces like elevator buttons. Elevator Remote Call Feature using WhatsApp is the solution we have for you. It allows you to call an elevator using social messaging channels like WhatsApp, and completely eliminates the need to touch possibly contaminated buttons or displays. You simply have to add us to your WhatsApp contact. Once you enter the building, you can key in the floor/level where you wish to go. (For e.g. you could key in From 0 to 2). You will receive a response that tells you which elevator you need to get into. Once you get in, the elevator automatically goes to your chosen floor. It’s as simple as that!

Keeping the equipment safe and running

Smooth people flow movement is more critical now than ever before, as we tentatively get back to our social lives and usher in a new normal. With?cloud based KONE 24/7 Connected Services?we can monitor the wear and tear of the machine and predict service requirements even before they arise. This ensures lesser downtime and consequently smooth and seamless movement for you.

Your safety and ensuring a cleaner environment for you, has been and will remain our priority. We have always been an extremely safety conscious organization, and this deep rooted culture has helped us arrive at comprehensive well-being solutions for you.

We believe that these tough times shall pass. There will soon be a new dawn when this disease is behind us. And the safety practices we inculcate now, will help us stay safe in the future as well. We are with you. We are thinking of your safety. Together we can, and we will get ahead.

Maintaining safe distance

It is absolutely critical that you maintain the requisite social distance even within an elevator cabin. To build this as consistent safety practice, we have designed physical distancing elevator floor stickers which clearly indicate where you need to stand. We also have elevator full load limit adjustment censors which ensure less crowding inside the elevator.
